Abstract: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are application layer networks which enable networked hosts to share resources in a distributed manner. An important problem in such networks is to be able to e ciently search the contents of other peers. In this paper we present a survey of search techniques for information retrieval in P2P networks, including recent techniques proposed by the authors. We also present a realistic experimental evaluation and comparison of these techniques, using a distributed middleware infrastructure we have designed and implemented.
